About Us
As a local council, South Suburban MoveOn is affiliated with the national MoveOn.org organization, but has no paid members and receives no routine funding from the national organization. We have our own mission statement, which is the following:
Our vision is to keep the dream alive-”that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth”. In pursuit of this vision, we shall, in a peaceful but progressive manner, work for economic and social justice by holding our elected officials accountable, informing citizens on the issues with facts, not propaganda, and be a platform from which their voices can be heard.
We also have a few core principles that guide us. They are:
It is our shared responsibility to preserve America’s historic promise of liberty, justice, and ever- expanding opportunity for all people.
A healthy democracy requires tireless vigilance against corruption and abuses of power, and a government that is accountable to its people.
All people have a right to the basic necessities required to lead dignified lives and pursue happiness.
Through participation in the political process, we honor our responsibility to promote the common good.
Our membership includes teachers and other professionals, small business owners, both union and nonunion laborers, students, retirees, veterans and some of the newly unemployed. We are law-abiding citizens who know that our democracy has a rich history of peaceful protest and civil disobedience to effect change.
As a member of the South Suburban Council, we are free to donate or not to the national organization; we pay no dues on the local level. We are a group of like-minded citizens who are motivated to do more than complain and blame.
We provide an avenue for the average person to unite around common beliefs and to influence elected officials of both parties.
Our purpose is to inform citizens of the south suburbs about our council and encourage any who find our mission and our principles compatible with their sensibilities to consider joining us or contacting us concerning any questions or concerns they may have about our organization.
